Ring Resizing

Picture this: It’s a lazy Sunday afternoon and you decide to spend it in the best way known to women – online shopping! Fast forward to a few hours later when you spot the most stunning ring you’ve ever seen. Needless to say, it’s an instant buy. And while you have a good feeling about this, a couple of days later, your elation devolves into horror…your sparkler has arrived but it doesn’t fit! Lucky for you, that doesn’t have to be where the story ends, because with a little ring resizing, your stunner will be ready to flaunt in no time.

Ring Size Guide

But wait, is it easy and more importantly, how does a jeweler go about changing the size of your ring?

Read on to find out…

What’s the Perfect Ring Fit?

If you’re currently in the market for rings for women , we highly recommend opting for one that can glide over your knuckle (the bone joint in the middle of your finger) while still experiencing some resistance.

Different Ring Upsizing Methods

While there aren’t really any at-home methods for enlarging or resizing your engagement ring or any other ring for that matter, there are a few methods that a jeweler can use to give your ring the fit you’re looking for:

1. Stretching

Upsizing-stretching

This two-step process starts with the jeweler heating your ring to soften its metal. Next, with the precision of a surgeon and the patience of a saint, he gently widens the circumference of the ring using a metal mandrel or ring stretcher. Et voila, your stunner is ready to flaunt.

Important Note: Your ring can only be stretched by half a size before it starts protesting like a pair of too-tight jeans after a holiday feast. Also, this method is only suitable for plain bands with no gemstones.

2. Cut and Spread

In the world of ring resizing, this method is the equivalent of plastic surgery.

Here, the procedure starts with the jeweler expertly cutting the bottom portion of the ring. Once done, he replaces the now empty space of the shank with enough metal to stretch it to the precise size you’re after.

Lastly, he solders and polishes the piece to remove all traces of the procedure, leaving your sparkler ready to flaunt.

Ring Downsizing Method

Jewelers use the ‘Cut and Shrink’ method to permanently downsize or resize your wedding ring or any other ring. Here’s how it works:

Step #1: The Jeweler Makes an Incision

No, not a life-threatening one – just a small section removed from the bottom part of the ring, leaving a gap.

Step #2: Things Get Heated Up

This is where the jeweler uses heat to soften the ring metal, enough for it to undergo transformation.

Step #3: The Grand Union

The jeweler skillfully brings the ends together to create the snug embrace you’ve been craving.

Step #4: The Final Touch – Soldering and Polishing

This is the final step through which the jeweler removes any evidence of the resizing, leaving you with a piece that looks as perfect as the day you got it.

Did You Know?

The history of ring resizing can be traced to the origin of jewelry itself, roughly 25,000 years ago. Similar to today, the traditional technique involved cutting the bottom portion of the piece and bringing the ends together or adding more metal for a snug fit.

How long does it take to resize an engagement ring or any other ring, you ask?

That depends – While it usually doesn’t take much time, sometimes the rings demand a grander transformation. In those cases, where the resizing turns into a full-blown ring remake, it might take a while.

At Angara, we understand the importance of the perfect fit, which is why your first ring resizing is on the house. What’s more, we’ll even throw in free shipping both ways if you let us know about it within the first 30 days of purchase. And as a holiday bonus, we typically extend the free resizing period during the festive season, to give you more time to deck your fingers with the right-sized sparkle.

Of course, if you cross the 30-day mark, fret not. You’ll still get your resizing, but the shipping (both ways) will tap into your pockets. And for any other query related to ring resizing – we’re just a call away, ready to answer any questions you might have

FAQ

Is it safe to resize a ring?

In most cases, it’s absolutely safe to resize your ring.

What rings cannot be resized?

Eternity rings cannot be resized as there’s not enough metal for the jeweler to cut into. Apart from this, tension rings (which feature a setting that’s specially customized to hold the gem in place) cannot be resized as doing so could impact the look of the entire piece as well as the security of the stone.
