Known as the traditional black gemstone, onyx has been used in jewellery and other carvings for centuries. Even today, its edgy charm, considerable durability and affordability make this gem highly sought-after in the jewellery world. And with the rising popularity of black jewellery, the versatile onyx surely seems to be having its moment of fame, just like the Little Black Dress!

But if you thought that onyx is only available in black, think again. While black onyx may be the most popular variety, onyx does come in a range of different colours. Shocked? Well, there’s a lot more to learn about this eye-catching gem and its myriad hues.

Let’s dive right in.

What is Onyx?

Onyx is a variety of layered chalcedony, part of the quartz mineral family. Typically, an onyx is either completely opaque or slightly transparent.

But, What Colour is Onyx?

Well, the most common type of onyx has two basic layers, a black base and a white upper layer. However, some varieties of onyx exhibit parallel bands of different colours in between these layers. And based on these colour bands, onyx is classified into different types.

So, What Are the Different Types of Onyx Available?

1. Sardonyx

Sardonyx is usually flat banded and has a brown base with colour bands in shades of red. It is a relatively common and affordable variety of onyx.

2. Cornelian Onyx

This variety of onyx has a red base with lighter colour bands. Cornelian or carnelian onyx displays alternating red and white bands that look extremely appealing.

3. Niccolo Onyx

Niccolo onyx has a very thin upper layer. It allows the colour of the black base layer to be seen through as grey or blue.

4. Blue Onyx

The blue onyx variety includes onyx gemstones that are dyed in different shades of blue. These gems may be banded or without bands. Banded blue onyx usually features white stripes. What’s more, blue onyx is also referred to as the ‘Stone of Sobriety.’

5. Black Onyx

There are certain onyx varieties where the stone has a single colour and no colour banding. Black onyx, the most popular type of onyx, belongs to this category. However, a solid black onyx is rarely found in nature. Usually, a grey chalcedony undergoes treatment and is turned into a black onyx.

No matter the hue, the stunning onyx will always stand out with its intriguing beauty and dramatic allure, making it a staple piece in your wardrobe. Plus, is there anything that black doesn’t match?
