Are you celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or any special occasion? If yes, then we highly recommend treating yourself or your loved one to sparkling sapphires! Part of the ‘big three’ of precious and coloured gems, the sapphire has a history that is as vibrant as its dazzling blue colour. But is it a rare jewel or not? Let’s find out.

First, here’s some quick info on this stunning gem…

Sapphire, part of the corundum mineral family, is believed to have been first discovered in Kashmir around 1881. During this year, a Himalayan landslide exposed a large pocket of velvety cornflower blue crystals. Soon, new deposits were found across the state and Kashmir sapphires became one of the most coveted gems across the world.

While this jewel is famous for its distinctive blue colour, it can also be found in multiple other hues, such as pink, yellow, orange, and even green.

The sapphire has had an incredible journey, from being one of the significant stones on Aaron’s breastplate to becoming the sweetheart of royal families, this gem has been there and done that! Today, it is recognised as the birthstone of September and the gem for commemorating the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.

So back to the main question, is sapphire a rare gem?

The answer is – yes! Sapphires are rarer than diamonds, but not so much in comparison to fine-quality emeralds or rubies. However, it’s important to note that some types of sapphire are extremely rare. This includes the Padparadscha – a scarce variety that showcases a mix of pink and orange tones. One of the rarest gemstones in the world, Padparadscha sapphires unsurprisingly come with a hefty price tag. Similarly, six and twelve-ray star sapphires are also quite difficult to find.

Are they worth purchasing?

Absolutely! Sapphires are not only revered for being a precious gemstone, but also for two other USPs…

1. Durability

Gemstone hardness is measured on the Mohs scale developed by Friedrich Mohs in the early 1800s. The ratings are based on the comparative ease or difficulty with which one mineral can get scratched by another. Accordingly, 1 indicates extreme malleability and 10 represents exceptional toughness. Sapphires have a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale, which means they are extremely durable and come second only to diamonds. This makes them a great choice for everyday wear, and also for engagement and wedding jewellery.

2. Different Varieties

As mentioned earlier, this gem can be found in multiple hues. Blue sapphire is the most famous and is believed to be a symbol of loyalty, trust, and devotion. Pink and yellow sapphires are equally sought-after and a great choice for those who love a pop of vibrancy. Similarly, orange, purple and green sapphires are beautiful alternatives if you’re looking for something that’s not blue.

Final Thoughts

Buy sapphire jewellery only from a reputed brand and always pick quality over size/quantity. cheque the Certificate of Authenticity to ensure that you’re completely aware of all the details of the gem, such as its dimensions, carat weight, and whether or not it has undergone any type of enhancement.
