While it may look like a diamond, the moissanite couldn’t be a more different gemstone. Not convinced?

Read on to find out 5 intriguing facts about this jewel that definitely set it apart from the rest.

Fact #1: Moissanites Are Brighter Than Diamonds

Yes, you read that right! Though seemingly simple, this gorgeous gem is actually 2.5 times more brilliant than diamonds and pretty much any other gemstone. Not only that, but it also features a dispersion of 0.104.

Considering the above, if you’re in the market for a jewel that outshines all others, the moissanite should definitely be your first choice.

Fact #2: It Was Originally Found in a Meteorite

Believe it or not, this splendid jewel was first discovered in a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona. Interestingly, it took French chemist Henri Moissan 11 years to identify the stone as silicon carbide. At the time, many scientists believed that it could only be found in meteorites. This was until 1958 when the gem was rediscovered as inclusions in kimberlite in a diamond mine.

Fact #3: It Is an Exceptionally Rare Gemstone

Even today, moissanites are considered to be one of the rarest gemstones in the world. In fact, all the stones currently available are lab-created. Hence, if you want an environmentally-friendly piece that’ll spotlight your style, this gem is definitely the one for you.

Fact #4: The Moissanite Is Quite Durable

With a 9.25 rating on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, the moissanite is one of the most durable jewels available today (second only to diamonds). This makes it a great option for everyday jewellery like engagement rings, for example.

Fact #5: Moissanites Are More Heat Resistant Than Other Gemstones

A little-known fact about most precious and semi-precious stones is that they can get damaged or change their colours if exposed to extremely high temperatures. The same can’t really be said for moissanites. Several studies show that this gemstone is far more heat resistant than its counterparts and can withstand temperatures up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. In rare instances, the gem’s hue may change but it will definitely return to its original colour after a while.

5 Intriguing Facts About the Moissanite FAQ

  • Is the moissanite a fake diamond?
Absolutely not! Though they look similar, the moissanite and diamond are actually two completely different gemstones.
  • Can moissanites get cloudy?
No, they cannot! Moissanites are exceptionally stable gemstones that do not change their color or get cloudy over time. Having said that, the surface of the gemstone can get hazy if it isn’t cleaned from time to time.
  • Can you wear a moissanite in the shower?
We do not recommend it. While the water itself may not harm your gemstone, the products that you use could cause a build-up of oils and eventually dull your stone’s shine.
  • Can a moissanite last a lifetime?
Considering the stone’s immense durability, it will definitely last a lot longer than a lifetime.
  • Can a diamond scratch a moissanite?
Yes, a diamond can scratch a moissanite if pressed against it.
