Rings have been sought-after since the earliest times of human civilization. Evidence suggests that people around the world have been wearing this charming finger adornment for several ages. Over time, there have been changes and additions to the styles and designs of rings available. One thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that – rings are used to symbolize marriage.

History of Rings

Simply put, a ring is a circular band made of precious or decorative metal that is worn on fingers and toes too. Rings are not only a means of adorning the body, but they have functional symbolism too. They serve as seals, decorative items, personal talisman, a symbol of societal status, and even a way to pledge love. The use of rings to declare love can be traced back to up to 3000 years (surprising, isn’t it?).

Significance of the Shape

Have you ever wondered – why only a ring and not any other jewellery type is used to signify marriage? Well, the answer to this is hidden in the simple circular shape of rings. Yes! Ancient Egyptians believed the ring, a circle, to be a powerful symbol and hence, exchanged “rings of love”. With no ending or beginning, the circle is said to represent infinity and eternal love and life. Even Greeks and Romans believed the same and thus held rings in the highest regard. However, Romans are considered to be the first ones to link rings to marriage. They often used “Fede rings” that depicted two hands clasped together in love to express their commitment. Later, this custom of exchanging rings was incorporated in Christian wedding ceremonies and continues to date.

The Ring Finger

Not only the shape of the ring, but also the finger on which the ring is worn carries considerable significance. During Roman times, people strongly believed that the vein in the fourth finger of the left hand went up to the heart. This vein was called vena amoris, or the vein of love and hence, they preferred to wear wedding rings on that finger. Even though modern science has disapproved of this notion, the belief stands even today and people wear their wedding bands on the fourth finger or the ring finger.

Popular Wedding Ring Styles:

wedding ring is one adornment that will always be with you and remind you of your cherished life-changing moment. From the different ring styles available today, certain designs are particularly popular as wedding rings.

1. Eternity Bands

In eternity bands the diamonds or gemstones are encrusted all around the band. They form an endless circle of sparkle, signifying love and commitment that lasts till the end of time. These gems are arranged in a single row or at times even multiple rows for a clustre, lustered effect.

2. Half-Eternity Bands

Half-eternity or Semi-eternity rings showcase sparkling gemstones embellished on the top half of the band. These rings can have a single gem or more than one gem alternately placed for a dazzling look.

3. Infinity Bands

These bands feature the infinity symbol, which resembles the horizontal numeral 8. They represent the concept of never-ending love and are apt for couples looking for a stunning yet meaningful token of commitment.

4. Plain Bands

Classic and elegant, plain wedding bands have been a popular wedding ring style since the earliest times. These bands are crafted with precious metals, and are available in a variety of finishes such as hammered, satin, matte and more.
