How to Wear Pearl Jewelry?

Pearl is the only natural gemstone that forms inside a living organism. It is composed of calcium carbonate and can get scratched or damaged easily. Therefore, it demands special care as compared to other gemstones. Chemicals in household cleaners and cosmetic products can affect the surface of the pearl. Pearl jewelry like rings and bracelets in particular are susceptible to scratching. It is best to not wear it every day and keep it reserved for special occasions.

Other pearl accessories like earrings, necklaces or strands can be worn regularly, however, make sure it is the last thing you put on while dressing and the first thing to take off once you get home. Avoid spraying hair products or perfume with your pearl jewelry on.

How to Store Pearl Jewelry?

As mentioned before, the surface of pearls is soft and can easily get scratched by other pieces of jewelry in your collection. A velvet pouch or box are good options to store your pearl jewelry and keep it safe. Do not store pearls in a plastic bag as it can emit a chemical that may damage the surface of your pearls. If you own a beautiful strand of pearls, make sure it is not hung but laid flat. Hanging it for a long period can cause the thread to stretch out and become loose.

How to Clean Pearl Jewelry?

Pearl jewelry should be cleaned every time you wear it. After you take it off, gently wipe with a soft cloth to retain the luster and remove any residue that may have transferred on the surface of the pearls. Apart from this, give your pearls a deep cleaning if they start to look dingy. You can follow the instructions below:

  • Add a few drops of mild detergent in warm water to get a soapy solution.
  • Dip a soft cloth in this solution and gently wipe your pearl jewelry. Do not soak the jewelry in the water as it can cause the string to weaken.
  • Now dampen a clean, soft cloth in fresh water and wipe the pearls again. This will remove soap residue from the surface of the pearls.
  • Before storing back, make sure you allow it to air dry for a few hours.
