Earrings are the kind of jewelry that comes in a pair and losing even one of them renders the other useless. We don’t know about you, but losing earrings that are especially expensive or a favorite can make anyone feel sick in their stomach. After all, earrings like any other jewelry are not just fancy baubles but also hold sentimental value. So if you know how to secure earring backs properly, you’ll never lose an earring ever again! Below are the different types of earring backs and tips to adjust them the correct way.

1. Pushbacks

Also known as butterfly backs, scrolls or friction backs, pushbacks are most widely used for inexpensive earrings. This type of earring back slides onto a straight post and holds your earring in place through friction. The notches on the post aid in keeping the backs of the earrings secure. However, if the pushback tab is not correctly positioned or slightly off-kilter, it may tend to get stuck on the post and be difficult to remove. Wearing them is a breeze if you hold the backings firmly and push them onto the post by applying adequate tension. Pushbacks are convenient to use and relatively smaller in size, so they are perfect for those with small earlobes. However, pushbacks tend to loosen with frequent usage and pose a risk of slipping off your earrings.

2. Screwbacks

As the name suggests, this type of earring back screws onto a threaded post like a nut. These too are small-sized backings and are a good option for those with smaller earlobes. In comparison to pushbacks, screwbacks are more secure earring backs as they firmly hold the earring in place until they are unscrewed to remove. The screws will not come off easily as there is more friction on the post. However, screwback closures do take longer to affix, as they have to be fastened around the post till they hug the earlobes. Most wearers consider this extra effort worthwhile to secure precious gemstone or diamond earrings.

3. Secure Lock Backs

These are the most secure type of earring backs for studs. On sliding these backs on the post, they firmly lock into place through a double grooved secure locking mechanism. These are mainly used for costly diamond stud earrings. Secure lock backs have a circular plastic disc that rests upon the earring. This supports the earlobe and makes large and heavy diamonds feel more comfortable and secure on the lobes. The flat plastic disc also helps hold heavy earrings in place without any risk of them falling off. However, this plastic disc may be visible from the bottom or sides of smaller earlobes.

4. Latch Backs

Latch backs are one of the most popular closures used for hoop and dangling earrings. These closures have a hinged post that is slightly curved to attach to the metal catch. The catch shape could vary depending on the overall earring design, but mostly it could be U-shaped or loop-shaped, with the short post perfectly fitting into the loop. 5. Leverbacks

Leverbacks are the safest options for dangle and drop earrings. The leverback closure has a hook that goes into the earlobe and closes mechanically by the ear clip, which prevents the earrings from falling off. These earring backs, which come in different sizes and types, are made of a hinged post and a metallic latch. This form of earring back is easy to adjust and put on or take off. What’s the best thing about them? Apart from offering a secure closure, they lend an elegant drop look naturally and are sometimes, embellished with sparkly diamond accents.
