How-to-Care-Akoya-Pearls

Elegant and dreamy, the quintessential Akoya pearl is a great addition to almost every outfit. That said, this stone is very delicate and susceptible to damage.

So if you want to know how to care for this gorgeous gem, then continue reading this article…

But first, what is an Akoya pearl?

Akoya pearls are organic gemstones born within a specific type of saltwater oyster known as Pinctada Fucata Martensii. This gem can be found in beautiful hues, which include pink, ivory and white. Akoya pearls are primarily sought-after for their perfect round shape and eye-catching metallic sheen.

How do you take care of it?

This can be easily done by following the list of dos and don’ts mentioned below.

Dos

  • To prevent scratches and damage that can be caused by other gemstones and accessories, we recommend storing your Akoya pearl jewelry in a soft cloth pouch and placing it in a cool, dry place.
  • Flaunt these pearls at least once a month to keep them hydrated. Having said that, make sure that you wear them only in an air-conditioned environment as perspiration can damage the outer layer of this stone.
  • Wear your jewelry only after you are completely dressed up for the occasion, and take it off as soon as the event is over. This will limit the gem’s exposure to different chemicals that might be present in your lotion, makeup, perfume, etc.
  • Clean this gem after every use to ensure that any dirt or chemicals accumulated on its surface are completely removed. The best way to do this is to simply wipe it clean with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Finally, get your Akoya pearl jewelry cleaned and checked by a professional at least once a year.

Don’ts

  • Do not store this gem in air-tight spaces, like a safe deposit box, as that could dry it out and lead to surface cracks.
  • Believe it or not, the chemicals present in plastic bags can eat into the outer layer of this pearl. So to prevent this, simply avoid using the same for storage.
  • Do not leave this jewel in water as that could affect the overall durability of the piece in the long run.
  • The pearl is an extremely delicate gemstone and should, therefore, ideally, be worn only on special occasions. Also, keep it away if you plan to cook, exercise, swim, etc.
  • Protect this gem from abrasive materials and cleaning agents, including household products.
  • We do not recommend ultrasonic and steam cleaners as the intensity can damage the pearl.

Extra care tips

1) Metal

Platinum is a great option for your Akoya pearl stunner. Not only is this metal incredibly durable, but it’s also coveted for being hypoallergenic in nature. Trust us when we say that there’s no better choice out there for your jewel.

2) Protective Setting

We highly recommend a bezel setting for your pearl accessory. It offers an extra layer of security to the stone by covering its entire circumference, thereby protecting it from any accidental knocks that it may experience.

Needless to say, the Akoya pearl is truly a remarkable gemstone. And by following the care tips mentioned above, you should have no problem retaining its beauty for a long time.
