Opals are undoubtedly one of the most underrated gemstones available today. But unlike most other precious jewels, like diamonds and rubies, opals are truly distinct and have an eye-catching look that’s unlike any other. What makes the opal even more exclusive is its wide range of patterns and flashes of hues, famously known as the play-of-color. This unique feature is what makes the opal a worthwhile possession.

But how do you preserve the beauty and vibrancy of this gem to ensure it always looks stunning?

Let’s find out…

But first, here’s some quick info on the Opal’s meaning and history

The name of opal, the traditional October birthstone, is believed to have originated in India. In the country’s ancient Sanskrit language, it was referred to as ‘upala’ – a precious stone. In ancient Greece, on the other hand, it was called ‘opalus’. Most opals were valued for their prismatic color-shifting patterns seen on the surface.

The dramatic appearance of this gem inspired ancient writers to compare it to fireworks, volcanoes, and galaxies. According to historical sources, Bedouins (nomadic Arab tribes) had a belief that opal held the powers of lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms. Whereas ancient Greeks thought opals were a gift of prophecy and acted as a shield from diseases. Europeans had a different take on the opal and considered it an emblem of hope, faith, and purity.

So how do you care for Opal jewelry?

Opals are one of the most delicate gemstones found on earth and require special TLC. It is important to keep in mind that this jewel has a rating of 5.5 – 6.5, which means it can be damaged or scratched easily. By keeping the following points in mind, however, you can maintain the beauty of your opal jewelry for years to come.

  1. Store it Correctly: Even though opals contain up to 20 percent water, they may still become brittle. So it is imperative that they are not stored in a dry or warm place for an extended period of time, as this can cause fracture lines called ‘crazing’. Therefore, the correct way to store your opal pendant necklace, ringbracelet and earrings would be to keep them wrapped in a padded cotton pouch. For long-term storage, you can also place your opal in cotton wool with a few drops of water and keep it in a cool, dark place.
  2. Cleaning: The method of cleaning your opal jewelry depends on the type of opal you have. While some opals are just a single-piece gem, others have two or three layers glued together. In the case of solid precious opals, you can soak them in an extremely mild soap-water solution for a few seconds and then wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth. Whereas, if you have a doublet or triplet opal, put a small amount of the same soap-water solution on a microfiber cloth and use it to gently wipe away any dirt or grime.
  3. Keep Away from Chemicals: Avoid using chemicals, bleach, and ultrasonic cleaners on the opal to help it stay in top shape. Moreover, we recommend removing your opal jewelry while cooking, exercising, and swimming.

Parting Note

Exposing opals to the natural humidity and moisture of your body keeps them hydrated and preserves their natural colors. So, don’t be afraid to wear your opal studs and other pieces more often. And keep the above-mentioned tips in mind to increase the lifespan of your opal jewelry.
