If you’re in the market for a spectacular metal that promises durability and sophistication, then platinum is definitely what you’ve been looking for. And with the right care, this precious metal is sure to last you a lifetime.

Read on to find out how to do just that…

But First, What Is Platinum?

Named after the Spanish word ‘platina’ which translates to ‘little silver’, platinum is one of the rarest precious metals present in the world today. It is primarily known for its elegant appearance, dense structure, and for being hypoallergenic in nature, which especially makes it a great choice for people with sensitive skin.

Care Tips

1. Take Care During Storage

Platinum, while an exceptionally durable metal, is not immune to damage or even scratches. To avoid this and the entanglement of different accessories, we recommend placing your platinum piece in a velvet-lined case, away from your other jewelry items.

2. Avoid Chemicals

Believe it or not, the chemicals present in everyday products like cleaning supplies, perfumes, hairsprays, etc. can be quite harsh. They can weaken the structure of your precious metal over a period of time. Also, the chlorine present in swimming pools can ruin the platinum’s shine and cause discoloration. To prevent this, keep your platinum jewelry away from such chemicals.

3. Keep It Aside

All of us can agree that the platinum is beautiful to look at. However, it can get dirty quite easily. This is primarily due to its bright white hue. As such, remember to remove your jewelry item before participating in hands-on work like gardening, exercising, cleaning and cooking.

4. Clean It Well

To prevent build-up and protect this metal’s shine, we urge you to give your platinum jewelry a deep-cleaning session, whenever you feel it is beginning to look dull. You can easily do this at home by following the steps mentioned below…

  • Start by soaking your accessory in an ultra-mild soap-water solution for one to two minutes. This will loosen the dirt’s hold on it.
  • With a soft-bristled brush, gently scrub the surface of the metal to remove all the grime that may have accumulated. Pay special attention to the edges and corners of the jewelry item as that is where most of the dirt tends to settle. Note: Avoid using a toothbrush if your platinum jewelry is embellished with gemstones. In such cases, a soft cloth can be used for gentle scrubbing.
  • Once done, place your platinum accessory under running water until all the soap residue gets washed away.
  • Finally dry your jewelry piece with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Alternatively, you can also use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner for this metal. Having said that, do note that these devices may not be suitable for all gemstones, especially those that are treated or fracture-filled.

5. Get It Professionally Checked

We highly recommend getting your platinum jewelry checked and cleaned by a professional jeweler at least once every year. This will ensure that this metal retains its amazing shine for years to come.

Strong and sophisticated, platinum is definitely a metal that every person should consider investing in. And with the care tips mentioned above, your piece will continue to look brand new for a very long time.
