What are South Sea pearls?

Luxurious in nature, the South Sea pearl is an organic gemstone born within the Pinctada maxima oyster. Based on the variety used (white-lipped or gold-lipped oysters), this jewel can be found in three major hues, which include silver, white and gold. Having said that, do note that the golden South Sea pearls are one of the most valuable ones present in the market today.

Care Tips

1. Storage

To prevent scratches, store your pearls in a soft cloth pouch away from your other gems and accessories.

Don’ts

  • Avoid placing this jewel in a plastic bag as the chemicals present within the same could degrade the durability of the pearl over a period of time.
  • Do not leave this gem in water, heated areas, or in airtight containers (including safe deposit boxes), as they all could adversely affect the structure and shine of the South Sea pearl.

2. Wear It

South Sea pearls require moisture to rehydrate themselves and refuel their soft radiance. So make it a point to wear them at least once a month, in air-conditioned areas.

Don’ts

  • Despite their extremely thick nacre, South Sea pearls are still quite delicate. They are, therefore, not fit for daily wear.
  • Perspiration can damage the outer layer of this gemstone, so avoid wearing it in hot and humid climates.
  • Don your South Sea pearl jewelry only after you get ready for the day and take it off immediately after the event is over. This will limit the contact between the pearl and the chemicals that might be present in your lotion, perfume, makeup, etc.

3. Cleaning

Clean the piece after every use to remove the chemicals that may have accumulated on the stone’s surface. You can do this by simply wiping it with a soft, damp piece of cloth.

Don’ts

  • Avoid using steam or ultrasonic cleaners on the South Sea pearls as their intensity can do more harm than good.
  • Similarly, the roughness from toothbrushes and other abrasive materials could scratch the surface of this gemstone, so refrain from using the same.
  • Finally, avoid contact with detergents, commercial cleaning agents (even gentle ones), vinegar, bleach, and baking soda as they could severely damage this jewel.

Styling Tips

  1. Semi-formal wear: To floor people with your look, we suggest teaming up a plain dark green full-sleeved dress with a simple pair of golden South Sea pearl dangle earrings. The beauty and hue of this jewel will draw attention to your face and outfit, without making it seem too over the top.
  2. Formal black-tie events: For this look, start by wearing a high-neck black gown and a pair of stilettos. Class-up the outfit with a white South Sea pearl strand bracelet and a pair of drop earrings.

Blessed with a luxurious appeal, the South Sea pearls are definitely an heirloom-worthy possession. And now that you’re armed with the best care tips, we’re sure your jewelry will last for a long, long time.
