History of Heart Symbol

The origin of the present-day ideograph of love can be traced back to the 13th century. Records state that it first appeared as a symbol of love in the manuscript of the French romance ‘Roman de la Poire’ (Romance of the Pear). mediaeval art captures many examples of the heart symbol. However, this symbol was usually portrayed upside down until the late 14th century. It was then reversed to resemble the symbol we know today.

Heart-shaped jewellery is considered to have made its debut sometime around the late mediaeval age, between the 14th and 15th centuries. The preserved chronicles describe rudimentary heart-shaped rings and brooches with short love poems inscribed on the surface.

The heart shape, as illustrated by jewellery designers, has taken many forms through the centuries. The early delineation was a pear-shaped figure which then evolved to an ovate form.

16 Century

By the 16th century, the heart shape gained immense popularity. This was a period of courtly love and chivalry. Brave knights displayed their affection for damsels in distress by presenting entwined and double heart lockets.

17th and 18th Centuries

With the rise of witchcraft in the 17th and 18th centuries, the icon found its place in ‘the witches’ heart’ or ‘Luckenbooth’ twisted heart brooches. These brooches were used as talismans to ward off evil spirits. During this era, the double heart signified a committed relationship.

19th Century

The emblem of everlasting love is said to have been most in vogue during the Victorian Era. Numerous fashion-forward women followed the trend set by Queen Victoria. She often donned a beautiful bracelet with heart-shaped charms representing each of her children.

20th Century

Timeless double hearts with a crown, signifying fidelity in marriage, topped the fashion charts throughout the 20th century. King Edward XVIII is believed to have presented Wallis Simpson with a beautiful inscribed heart charm.
