Wondering about the history of blue topaz? This blog is what you need to read!

Topaz is mentioned throughout history. Some gemologists also believe that topaz has been in existence since prehistoric times. The earliest known record of topaz is in the Old Testament. In their natural state, most topaz gemstones are either colourless or yellow. After being mined, the topaz stones get their vibrant hue, in this case, a sky-like blue, which is alluring and captivating.

The History of Blue Topaz

There is an ongoing debate on how topaz got its name. Some people trace its origin to the Sanskrit word Tapaz or Topas. Its literal translation means fire. Some people trace this precious stone all the way back to the Red Sea in the Mediterranean. There is an island in the Red Sea named Zabargadh. During ancient times this island was known as Topazios. Mineral peridot was in the most abundant quantity available on this island. People unaware of mineralogy confused it with topaz, and that’s how the name came to be.

In the Greek language, topaz means ‘something of varying colours’. This is attributed to the various colours in which topaz is available. The history of blue topaz  and how it got its name could be shrouded, but there is no denying that the blue topaz is an extremely beautiful stone, which benefits the wearer in multiple ways.

In Russia, topaz was mined in honour of the ruler Czar and therefore, until recently, only the royal family was allowed to wear them. Likewise, in Portugal, the gemstone adorned the royal crown for centuries.

  • Blue Topaz is an umbrella term that includes three types of blue topaz  namely Sky Blue, Swiss Blue and London Blue.
  • Silicate is the primary element in the composition of topaz. To get the defining blue colour, the stone is put through radiation. Neutrons are preferred for this treatment, as they do not cause any harm to the stone and also bring out a beautiful colour. Depending on the colour that is required, the neutrons and the time of the radiation are chosen. Then the naturally pale stones are taken to the nuclear reactors, where they are exposed to irradiation.
  • Sky blue topaz is the lightest shade of blue topaz. This topaz also gets colour through radiation treatment. However, the intensity of the radiation here is not very strong. Therefore, the colour that this stone displays is also very light and pristine.
  • The Swiss blue topaz is yet another type of blue topaz, which is extremely popular in contemporary jewellery. Even though the name suggests a Swiss connection, the stone does not have one. In the formation process of Swiss blue topaz, white topaz is cleaned thoroughly and then taken to the nuclear reactor, where they are exposed to radiation. The strength of radiation is slightly stronger than the one used at the time of the creation of the sky-blue topaz. This stone has a moderate and consistent saturation of silicate. The cost of the Swiss blue topaz is slightly higher than the sky blue topaz.

  • The London blue topaz is the most preferred type of blue topaz gemstone. Similar to the Swiss blue topaz, London blue topaz also does not have any connection to the city after which it is named. To create the London blue topaz, gamma radiations are chosen. Unlike the other types, here, it is not essential to use white or pale topaz. Gamma radiations eliminate any other colour present in the stone and only retain the blue hue. This process also mitigates impurities that might be present in the stone.
  • It is a fact that topaz undergoes treatment before it turns into a lovely blue topaz gemstone. Another fact about blue topaz is that they are safe to wear. It is understandable if you have reservations about a stone that you know has undergone radiation but with the blue topaz, the radiation is not that extensive nor does it remain in the stone. Once the stone gets its colour, the radiation is discontinued. After that, apart from the colour, there are no traces of any radiation present in the stone. It also does not carry radiation outside, which makes it completely safe to wear. However, if you still have doubts, it is best to consult an astrologer before choosing a blue topaz ring or pendant for everyday wear.
