With its classy look and eye-catching brilliance, the moissanite is one gemstone that can infuse sophistication into even the most mundane of outfits. And that’s why it’s such a popular jewel today.

But like all gems, the moissanite’s fame does come with several questions – one of the most important being whether it is durable or not?

If you find yourself asking the same, then you’re in luck! This article has all the answers you need.

Which Gemstone Are Most Durable?

What is Moissanite?

For the unaware, the moissanite is a semi-precious stone that boasts of a near-colorless hue. In certain cases, it may also have yellow or gray undertones. This jewel is lauded for its remarkable fire and intense brilliance which distinguishes it from other gemstones. Besides this, the moissanite is also known for its relative affordability, eco-friendliness, and association with self-confidence.

How do you gauge a gem’s durability?

The durability or toughness of a jewel refers to its ability to withstand scratches and other damage. The harder the stone is, the better suited it is for frequent or everyday wear.

To measure and rank a jewel’s hardness, Friedrich Mohs devised a scale in the year 1822. Here, each gemstone was given a rating between 1 (most malleable) to 10 (most sturdy) based on its resistance to getting scratched.

Needless to say, the scale is widely used even today and is considered to be an appropriate tool for understanding a jewel’s toughness.

What is gemstone cleavage?

This refers to the tendency of a gem to crack, get fractured, or break when subjected to a hard blow on defined planes. Based on this tendency, the stone can be placed in one of the following six categories…

  1. Perfect
  2. Imperfect
  3. Distinct
  4. Good
  5. Fair
  6. Poor

Note: The better/higher the gemstone cleavage, the more likely it is to break.

So, is the Moissanite durable?

Yes, it is!

The moissanite has a rating of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, plus it has poor cleavage. Both of these factors indicate that this stone is one of the most durable gems in the world and comes second only to the precious diamond.

How do you take care of the Moissanite?

1. Store it properly

To prevent your moissanite from scratching other gems, we recommend placing it in a velvet-lined case, away from your other accessories.

2. Avoid chemicals

Remember to keep your moissanite jewelry away from harsh chemicals, such as alkaline solutions, hydrofluoric acid, and ammonium fluoride. Also, keep this gem aside before taking a dip in pools containing chlorine water.

3. Clean it the right way

Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe to use for moissanites. However, if you wish to clean your jewelry at home, then consider using an ultra-mild soap-water solution and a soft cloth for gentle scrubbing. Rinse with clean water and dry with a lint-free cloth. Alternatively, you can also visit a professional jeweler for the same.

Elegant yet fashion-forward, the moissanite is nothing short of sheer artistry! And thanks to its excellent durability, this jewel is sure to last for a long time.
