The spessartite and orange sapphire are both equally beautiful. But that’s where their similarities end.

Join us today as we highlight the differences between these two jewels and discuss which one will be the better option for you.

Natural vs Lab Grown Gemstone

1. Color

Spessartite: Depending on the amount of magnesium in its chemical composition, this vivacious jewel can be found in different hues, ranging from vivid orange to deep reddish-brown.

Orange Sapphire: Like the spessartite, this gemstone can also be found in various shades ranging from yellowish-orange to reddish-orange. The color of this gem can vary depending upon the trace amounts of iron and chromium present in its chemical structure.

2. Symbolism

Spessartite: Earlier, spessartites were widely used in healing rituals for the mind and body. As its vibrant color resembled the sun, this gemstone was considered a symbol of power, strength, and prosperity. People also wore it to boost self-confidence.

Orange Sapphire: Unlike the spessartite, orange sapphires weren’t used in any rituals (healing or otherwise). However, they were and continue to be associated with calm and wisdom.

3. Durability

Spessartite: The spessartite has a rating of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and zero gemstone cleavage. As such, it is a relatively sturdy gem that can be flaunted frequently.

Orange Sapphire: With a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, the orange sapphire is undoubtedly one of the most durable gemstones available today. It is also an excellent option for jewelry that you wish to flaunt regularly, such as an engagement ring.

4. Rarity

Spessartite: Spessartites are somewhat rare. This is because they are created within certain pegmatite rocks that are rich in manganese. And the formation of these rocks is pretty sporadic. Also, gem-quality spessartites that showcase an intense orange hue with few to no inclusions are not easy to find.

Orange Sapphire: As touched upon before, orange sapphires rely on iron and chromium for their spectacular hue. The addition of these elements into the stone’s chemical structure doesn’t happen frequently. Due to this, the gem is one of the rarest variations of sapphire available today.

5. Affordability

Spessartite: In comparison to the orange sapphire, the spessartite is more affordable. This makes it a good option for those who wish to own a glamorous gem without overspending.

Orange Sapphire: Being a precious and highly durable gemstone, the orange sapphire does come with a reasonably hefty price tag. However, its USPs definitely justify the same.

Which Gem Should You Pick?

There is no right or wrong answer here, and this mainly depends on your personal preference and budget.

The spessartite is undoubtedly one of the most unique types of garnet you can get your hands on. So if you’re in the market for a luxurious-looking gemstone that is worthy of being flaunted at parties and other important social events, then this jewel is definitely the one that you should consider buying.
