In a world filled with gemstones, few of them stand out. The teal Montana sapphire and aquamarine happen to be two such jewels. Not only are they spectacular in their own right, but also unique in almost every way.

Join us today as we discuss what makes them different from one another.

Natural vs Lab Grown Gemstone

But first, are there any similarities between them?

Believe it or not, the teal Montana sapphire and aquamarine are alike in two distinct ways…

  • Both these gems are moderately rare and only found in certain regions.
  • They are also heat-treated to improve their overall appearance.

How are they different?

1. Colour

  • Teal Montana Sapphire: This captivating jewel is a type of ‘fancy sapphire’ and can be found in different shades ranging from medium blue to green. Currently, the rarest and most desired ones are those with an equal mix of blue and green.
  • Aquamarine: The shades of an aquamarine can range from a pale baby blue to a blue-green. The most sought-after ones have moderately strong colour intensity and showcase a deep blue or greenish-blue hue.

2. Symbolism

  • Teal Montana Sapphire: Being a combination of two extremely calming hues, this gem is often used to represent clarity and open communication.
  • Aquamarine: The aquamarine, on the other hand, is often associated with tranquility, harmony, and peace.

3. Durability

  • Teal Montana Sapphire: This is an exceptionally tough gemstone and has a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. As such, this blue-green jewel is a great option for everyday wear.
  • Aquamarine: The aquamarine has a rating of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. This means that while they may not be as tough as the sapphire, they are still considerably durable and can be worn often.
That said, do note that the aquamarine possesses the gemstone cleavage property and can get fractured if struck hard. Hence, it requires a tad more care and maintenance than the teal Montana sapphire.

4. Clarity

  • Teal Montana Sapphire: As with all sapphires, the teal Montana variant too tends to have flaws due to the formation process. They may appear in the form of colour zoning, feathers, and needle-like inclusions.
  • Aquamarine: Aquamarines, on the flip side, rarely have any visible inclusions and are typically eye-clean.

5. Affordability

  • Teal Montana Sapphire: Being a precious gemstone and an exotic variation of the sapphire jewel, this gem does come with a relatively high price tag.
  • Aquamarine: In contrast, this jewel is quite pocket-friendly and a great choice for anyone with a limited budget.

Which is better?

They are both equally amazing.

Luxurious and durable, the teal sapphire works well with almost every outfit and can make a great centre stone for the engagement ring.
