If there’s one jewel that personifies the words ‘unique beauty’, it’s definitely the moonstone. That said, have you ever stopped to wonder if its appearance is all-natural or if it is a result of synthetic treatments?

If yes, then keep scrolling…

But first, what is a Moonstone?

A member of the orthoclase feldspar group, the moonstone is the birthstone of June. Even though it is primarily considered to be a white gem, it can be found in various other hues, such as black, grey, green, yellow, and so on. This gemstone can even be colourless in nature.

The moonstone is primarily known for its adularescence – an optical phenomenon that looks much like the reflection of the moon on the calm surface of the sea. This particular feature has charmed many and resulted in this gemstone garnering some much-deserved appreciation.

The main question, does it undergo treatment?

Majority of moonstones are typically eye-clean, which means that they are free from any visible inclusions or imperfections. They, therefore, generally do not require any treatment.

That said, some stones may display characteristic flaws in the form of tiny tension cracks called ‘centipedes’. It is important to note that such inclusions interfere with the adularescence of the moonstone and bring down its value. So when buying this gem, try to pick a moonstone that looks almost transparent with a shimmering and clearly visible adularescence.

How do you take care of the Moonstone?

With a rating of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, the moonstone isn’t the most delicate gem out there, but it isn’t extremely tough either.  So essentially, it does require lot of care and attention. To ensure it continues to look beautiful for years to come, we highly recommend following the tips and tricks mentioned below…

1. Store it safely

Did you know? Tougher or harder jewels could scratch your moonstone and extreme heat can lead to cracks forming on the surface. To avoid these issues, store this gem in a felt-lined case or a soft velvet pouch away from your other gemstones and accessories. Also, consider placing the box in a cool, dry place like your closet.

2. Know when to wear it

The beauty of moonstone is truly unique, however it isn’t the strongest gem. Therefore we recommend saving this jewel for special occasions. However, if you wish to wear it more frequently, then you certainly can; but ensure to keep it aside when cooking as hot surfaces or items can damage this gem. Also do not wear it in the gym to avoid any accidental bumps or even in the swimming pool as chlorine water isn’t exactly safe for the moonstone either.

3. Keep away from chemicals

It may surprise you to know that harsh chemicals present in cleaning supplies, sanitizers, perfumes, etc., can harm this gem and ruin its shine. To avoid this, keep your jewellery away from such products as much as possible.

4. Get it chequeed by a professional

If you notice any scratches on your moonstone or if the setting is loose, then get it chequeed by a professional as soon as possible. In addition to correcting these issues, they can also do a thorough clean-up of the piece, if required.
