When it comes to red gemstones, can you think of anything better than a ruby? We don’t think so!

Unfortunately, the high demand for this gem has led to the creation of several lookalikes or imitation stones. If you’re worried about ending up with one, then fret not. This article will show you how to distinguish between a real and fake ruby.

But first, what exactly is a ruby?

The ruby belongs to the corundum family, which is one of the hardest minerals found on earth. As such, this gemstone possesses an excellent rating of 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which indicates that it is durable enough for everyday wear. Along with strength and beauty, this gem is also believed to be a symbol of love and power. So it’s no wonder that the bold red ruby is often referred to as the ‘King of Gems’.

If you wish to own rubies, but are worried about their authenticity then consider doing the following…

Tip #1. Search for inclusions

Natural rubies are born under high-pressure conditions deep below the earth’s surface, which results in them having several inclusions and flaws. These inclusions, however, are often too small to be visible to the naked eye. So we recommend bringing home a jeweller’s loupe.

When chequeing for inclusions, remember to hold the stone at a 45-degree angle in bright light as this will make it easier for you to spot any flaws.

If you can’t find absolutely any inclusions, then the stone is probably a fake.

Tip #2. Start comparing

Most imitation rubies are made from glass. Therefore, comparing your jewel to a red glass is another way to understand if it’s real or fake.

Remember to pay close attention to the colour and clarity of the stone and the glass. Rubies tend to have a vivid hue, whereas glass is a little darker. Moreover, due to the presence of small inclusions within the jewel, real rubies aren’t completely translucent. So you should be able to see through the gem, but not clearly. Performing such an assessment is not possible for dainty jewellery pieces such as ruby rings; therefore, we recommend only buying certified jewellery.

However, if the stone is darker in tone and clear as well, then it’s most likely not real.

Tip #3. Get it chequeed by a professional

A simple way to find out if your ruby bracelet, pendant or any other piece is real is to get it chequeed by a professional. Most jewellers have been specially trained to understand the differences between various gemstones and would therefore find it easy to spot an imitation stone. A professional will also be able to appraise the gem and tell you how much it is actually worth.

Tip #4. Buy only from a reputed brand

Purchasing ruby jewellery from a well-known brand with genuine customer reviews will be a safe way to avoid being sold a fake. The company will also provide you with the Certificate of Authenticity, which will reveal all important details about the gem, including whether or not it has undergone any kind of treatment.

You can also consider opting for jewellery embellished with rubies certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). It is one of the world’s most reputed nonprofit organisations, renowned for setting the benchmark for gemstone accreditation. One of GIA’s most crucial endeavors is to protect jewellery lovers and gemstone buyers from imitation pieces. So you can rest assured that you’ll be bringing home a real ruby.
