Can You Wear Promise Rings After Engagement?

Well certainly! Promise rings epitomize the beautiful bond between you and your loved one and it is a token of that promise that encapsulates love, commitment and appreciation. Needless to say, a promise ring can be worn for a lifetime. The question is, how to wear a promise ring after engagement? Before we get to that, let’s first figure out the difference between a promise ring and an engagement ring.

What’s the Difference Between an Engagement Ring and a Promise Ring?

A promise ring could symbolize a promise of fidelity, love or simply to be by their side forever. It does not necessarily imply that a marriage proposal has been made or accepted. Promise rings can have a variety of meanings depending on the couple’s preferences. An engagement ring, on the other hand, symbolizes a promise to marry.

Promise rings became popular especially when celebrity couples such as Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, and Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra exchanged promise rings and flaunted them to the world. In a way, they fuelled the current popularity of promise rings as a mainstream fad.

When Do You Give a Promise Ring?

Even though promise rings are not the same as engagement rings, they still represent a strong commitment to a relationship. Before considering a promise ring, most couples must have been involved for a long time, usually a year or more.

Promise rings necessitate discussing their actual significance and the promise being made. If you surprise your lover with a ring, they might think you’re proposing! This might result in befuddlement, disappointment and broken sentiments. A significant mistake could end up in a disaster and to avoid that, it is critical to explain the reason behind giving the promise ring and the promise it represents.

Promise rings are also exchanged between couples who don’t believe in marriage but are in a committed relationship. They firmly believe that the concept of marriage is archaic, but they still want a symbol signifying their current relationship. On the other hand, many young couples see a promise ring as a commitment to a future engagement and marriage. The promise ring serves as the token of their forever love, but they are not yet ready to commit to an engagement.

Alternatively, married couples may also give each other a promise ring to celebrate a fulfilled promise or to commit to a new promise. It could be a promise to give up a bad habit or achieve a goal as a couple. While in the traditional sense, promise rings are pre-engagement rings, there are no rules and they can be used to represent a variety of promises throughout your life.

Getting back to the question, ‘how to wear promise rings after engagement?’, the short answer is that you can wear them any way you like. Unlike engagement rings that are typically worn on the left hand ring finger, promise rings can be worn on any finger of any hand, or simply hung from a necklace! Having said that, many women choose to wear it on their left-hand ring finger by simply stacking them over the engagement ring, and the wedding band, if they’re married. Alternatively, the promise ring can be shifted to the right hand if the design or color clashes with the engagement ring. You can either continue to wear your promise ring on another finger or have a new piece of jewelry made from its components if you want to.

Using Promise Rings as a Wedding Band

Promise rings are sometimes so cherished that they become the symbol of the most significant promises of all! As a result, some couples choose to exchange their promise rings for wedding bands. Because the commitment made before the engagement is so important to the couple, repurposing the ring as a wedding band is something they think is ideal.
