Should You Wear Jewellery In The Pool?

A common misconception is that jewels like diamonds, sapphires and metals such as gold and platinum can withstand any amount of damage. However, gemstones are a result of various chemical reactions that occur due to the extreme conditions under the earth’s surface. They are, therefore, susceptible to damage if they come in contact with any material that can disturb their structure.

Experts believe that wearing jewellery in the swimming pool can damage them in many ways. So here are three important reasons why you should not forget to take them off…

1. Metals React with Chlorine

jewellery made in 14k or 18k yellow gold or rose gold, contain metals like copper and zinc in their chemical structure. Many swimming pools use chlorine in large quantities for cleaning. This chemical can react with the metal on your ring, earrings or necklace and lead to corrosion. Moreover, the gemstones can also get affected by chlorine and lose their lustre.

2. Stones May Fall Off

With regular exposure to the chlorinated water in the pool, the metal prongs on your ring may corrode. This will affect the fitting of the piece and there’s a high chance that the jewel may simply fall off. In case of bracelets and necklaces, the corroded metal near the clasps may become loose and you may end up misplacing your jewellery.

3. Sunscreens and Lotions are Harmful

Just like chlorine, sunscreen and lotions contain harmful chemicals that can cause irreparable damage to your fine gemstones. Together with the chemicals in the pool, these grooming items may react dangerously on your skin. Therefore, it is best to take off your gemstone jewellery before applying any beauty products, and especially if you plan to go for a swim.
