But what is the infinity symbol and why is it so famous?

Keep scrolling to find out…

The Genesis of the Infinity Symbol

Researchers have traced the roots of the infinity symbol to ancient Indian and Tibetan culture. It was used to represent equality in status and gender, and also considered a symbol of perfection. The infinity was found in various Celtic knot jewellery designs, which like the symbol itself, represented no beginning or end.

That said, it wasn’t until 1655 that the infinity symbol actually started gaining momentum. Mathematician John Wallis used it to denote an endless quantity of values. He was the one who named the symbol ‘infinity’ after the Latin word ‘infinitas’, which means boundless.

Some people also refer to it as a ‘lemniscate’ due to its shape. This particular word has its origin in the Latin language and means “decorated with ribbons”. The name was bestowed onto the symbol by Greek philosophers and mathematicians. This is because the infinity symbol also resembles a bow. The idea of the bow and the name was derived from the Ouroboros symbol, which showcases a serpent biting its own tail. It was meant to represent continuity and infinite mortality.

What Does Infinity Mean Today?

Today, this symbol has several abstract meanings that find their base in its origins.

The most common one is that of endless love which is why infinity stone jewellery has become a popular choice among couples. Besides this, the symbol also represents endless hope, boundless opportunity, and something that will never end. It is also considered to be synonymous with loyalty, while many believe it represents one’s faith in god.

Use in Luxury Jewellery

Because of its varied yet significant interpretations, infinity is quite a popular option for gifts as the symbolism changes depending on who the receiver is.

When gifted to a romantic partner, it represents a love that will never end. At the same time, it can also symbolize an everlasting friendship and infinite loyalty if gifted to a friend.

Depending upon your preference you can wear this symbol in a variety of ways, but the most popular jewellery item continues to be the ring. So if you’re thinking of surprising someone with a meaningful gift or want to declare your undying love then the infinity symbol might just be what you need.
