the pictured ring appears totally flat from side to side with indentations starting from the same plane as the center part of the ring. In actuality, the ridged part is quite obviously a bit lower than the center flat band. So, instead of being a single ring of metal with indentations, it appears as 3 parallel lines at different heights.
